Favorite Piece of Literature
Throughout the first semester we went through many types of literature such as essays, speeches, autobiographies, memoirs and novels. Out of these many great pieces of literature my favorite one had to be "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift. He was writing a proposal to the English government to somehow help the Irish survive the potato famine. Countless Irish citizens were dying because they had nothing to eat, not even a piece of bread. Swift's writing had a sarcastic tone that kept me interested on what he had to say next. Even though he was sarcastic and did not literally mean all the ideas he wrote, he still got his message across. I thought the method he used to be sarcastic with such a serious problem was incredibly smart. It showed the rich English people that the situation in Ireland is so terrible and unbearable, that people have to make drastic decisions in order to keep their families alive. His ideas about eating and selling babies were absurd, but only this type of "proposal" would actually make the English take a look at the poor Irish families. I enjoyed reading this piece of literature and hope to read similar stories in the second semester.

State Department Warns U.S. Travelers About Violence in Mexico
Hugo Martin, Los Angeles Times
Mexico, being a bordering country to America, receives a large number of American tourists every year. People go to Mexico to relax and spend some time away from all their troubles and worries. However, most people do not know that there is a high risk going into some parts of Mexico as a United States citizen. Even though the rate of U.S. citizens getting killed in Mexico decreased in the past year, it is still relatively high compared to other countries. The State Department has warned U.S. citizens not to go to four specific states in Mexico because of safety issues. These states are, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Durango and Tamaulipas. Last year 113 U.S. citizens were murdered in these four states, but this year the number has dropped down to thirty two. Even with this drastic decrease, these states are still considered unsafe and recommended that people do not go there unless it is necessary. The main cause for these incidents pertaining U.S. citizens is the drug cartels. Since the U.S. citizens do not know the safety boundaries and who these people are, they coincidentally end up in the center of the drug war. The State Department said that tourists in Mexico should be extra cautious late at night and early in the morning, because that is when the cartels are most active and dangerous.

Memories: Bees
All of us have had at least a few memories that we will never forget for the rest of our lives. Some of these even have an influence on our lives today, whether the influences are positive or negative. Most of these memories occur during our childhood and affect the way we behave in the future. I've had a few memories that are very similar to each other which have had negative effects on me.
About ten years ago I was at a picnic with my parents and cousins. We were all having a great time together until I had a sip of Sunkist. You might think that there is nothing wrong with having a drink during a hot day, but what you do not know is that there was a bee stuck in the can that I was drinking from. I also did not know about the bee inside the can so I started drinking. The second I felt the bee start flying in my mouth, I spit the Sunkist on the floor. Luckily, the bee did not sting me while it was in my mouth, but it sure did scare me. That is not the only incident I have had with bees. I have been stung by bees five times and for some reason I am still scared of bees today. Even though their size is very small compared to any other animal, I am scared of bees the most.

Fresh Methods Help Scientists Spot Super-Earth in Habitable Zone
Amina Khan, Los Angeles Times
After years of research, a group of astronomers recently found a planet forty-two light years away that might be habitable for human beings. They think that this planet might be suitable for humans to live in because the average temperature there is optimal to have liquid water. Without water even the simplest organisms can not survive. Other planets that astronomers have found are either too hot during the day, or too cold during the night. Along with this one planet, five other planets were discovered that orbit the same dwarf star. All six planets are habitable for humans because the distance from their star makes days and nights similar to Earth's.
All these planets have been found because scientists just discovered a new way to look for habitable planets. A new instrument has been made that only highlights the planets that have all the characteristics to be a suitable planet for humans. This means that the hunt for a new home for humans just got a bit easier. It is just a matter of time until new planets are found that humans can live in. Planet Earth is here for now, but in case of a catastrophic emergency, a backup planet would be a good idea to preserve the human race.

Three Virtues
Just how Benjamin Franklin tried to reach moral perfection by achieving his thirteen virtues, I tried doing the same but on a smaller scale. Instead of choosing thirteen virtues and working on them, I chose three and tried to concentrate on achieving them. The three virtues I chose to work on the past three days were silence, justice, and industry.
Silence was the one virtue that I had a hard time dealing with. Usually I would have no problem achieving perfection with this virtue. However, I had soccer practice on Thursday and Friday and I kept on yelling at some of my teammates out of frustration. Saturday was a completely different story. I was at home the whole day so silence came naturally. I did not yell at anyone nor did I say anything that I was not supposed to.
Justice in my opinion is one of the most basic virtues to have in order to reach moral perfection. It was the one virtue that I completely achieved without breaking any of the rules. I did not commit any crimes, hurt anyone, or steal. I knew that this virtue would be easy to accomplish because I usually avoid doing those wrong deeds in the first place. Other than just avoiding crimes, I am always with friends who try to stay away from doing anything wrong which influences me to do the same.
Throughout the three days I was somewhat productive in a positive way. Industry means doing something productive throughout the day that will be beneficial for either you or another person. I finally started typing my essay for a college class which was overdue by two weeks. I also finished my biology lab in one day which was productive. However, every night I played FIFA13 until 2:00 A.M. Other than just that, I was on espn.com all three days to see if I was winning my fantasy football and basketball games. I am currently losing in both. Being on the computer for such a long time reduced the time that I could have used to do something productive.

Girl's Suicide Puts Focus on Rape in Northern India
Mark Magnier, Los Angeles Times
Earlier this month a sixteen year old girl in India got raped while she was walking in the streets alone. Soon after she got raped, she committed suicide, probably because of fear and shame. In India if a girl her age gets raped instead the girl's family helping her, they beat them up.
This incident caused the government of India to focus more on this problem. The rate of girls getting raped in India has increased by 870% since 1971. Every year there are about 20,000 total rapes that happen in India. Now the government has found out a way to try to decrease this enormous number. India already has a tradition of marrying their children at a young age. Now, the government is giving incentives for families who marry their children at a young age. This will motivate people to marry their children early, because most of the citizens of India desperately need the money that the government is offering. By doing this, the government thinks that rape cases will decrease. 40% of the world's child marriages are in India and by enforcing this new law that number will increase which makes the case worse. Child marriages are hard to maintain and will not decrease the number of rape in a highly populated country like India.

Scarlet Letter
Who is at Fault?
At the beginning of the story Reverend Dimmesdale seems to be at fault for committing adultery with a married woman. Even at the end he is guilty for what he had done. In the first place he had no right to sleep with a married woman when he already knew that she was married. If he had not done that, none of these tragic events would have ever occurred. That one act caused the death of two people including himself, the suffering of Hester, and the rough childhood for innocent Pearl who had nothing to do with any of this. That is why I feel more sympathetic for Roger Chillingworth. Hester and Dimmesdale took advantage that Roger was gone and that is why Dimmesdale is at fault. Even though Chillingworth punished Dimmesdale by tormenting him frequently, he still deserved it. The "A" on his chest was another punishment, but he committed a sin voluntarily knowing that it was a sin.
All of the events that unfolded as the story went on affected Chillingworth negatively as well. He was coming back to her wife to live a normal life, but little did he know what was awaiting him back in Boston. Because of Dimmesdale, he had to live the rest of his life seeking revenge which took a great toll on his health, and eventually he died.

Scarlet Letter Important Quote
"Who is that man, Hester?" gasped Mr. Dimmesdale, overcome with terror. "I shiver at him! Dost thou know the man? I hate him, Hester!" She remembered the oath and was silent. (107)
This quote was said by Reverend Dimmesdale to Hester Prynne. He said this while him, Hester, and Pearl were standing on the scaffold all together. This scene was very important because the father, mother and child were all standing by each other as a "family". However, what makes this scene more significant in the novel is when Dimmesdale says the quote above referring to Roger Chillingworth. When he sees Chillingworth from far away he frantically asks Hester if she knows who the man is. From this scene, it can be understood that Dimmesdale is living with fear that eventually his actual identity as Pearl's father is going to be uncovered. Also, when he realizes that the man coming towards them is Chillingworth, he expresses his fear and hatred towards him.
The last sentence of this quote is also very important in the novel. When Dimmesdale asks Hester who the man is twice Hester keeps her mouth shut. She remembers the day her husband came back to town and told her to keep his true identity a secret. This shows what kind of character Hester Prynne has. Even though she cheated on her husband, she still keeps the one secret that she was told to keep to herself.

Turkey Says it Has No Intention For War With Syria
Patrick J. McDonnell, Los Angeles Times
As everyone already knows, there is massive violence happening in Syria for over a year and a half now. However, just a few weeks ago Turkey, which shares a border on Syria's northwestern side started aiding the rebels with weaponry. Last week, Turkish artillery sent strikes on Syrian territory killing multiple people and injuring even more. From these events one might think that Turkey has intentions for waging war against Syria.
"We have no intention for a war", said Turkey's Prime Minister Erdogan. According to Turkish officials the reason for their artillery strikes were in response to a strike from Syrian territory that killed five people. The U.N. and NATO both had meetings specifically for this incident in order to maintain a low level of violence between the two countries. The Middle East is already on the brink of international war and this incident can start one between Turkey and Syria, even though Turkey claims on having no intentions of war. If a war breaks out between Turkey and Syria, America will most probably have a part in the war since they are allies with Turkey.

The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter Ending
At the end of the book I think Pearl will not be in the hands of her mother anymore. Other than just that, Hester's husband will most probably get revenge on her in some way. I think these two events will occur because of what is happening now in the story.
Pearl will not be with Hester anymore because the people think that she is a demon and that is dangerous for Hester Prynne. Once they find out that Pearl is just a normal child, they will still take her away from her mother with the excuse of Hester not being a responsible parent, because of her prior actions. Regardless of Pearl being a demon or not, she will be taken away from the only person she has a connection to.
By the end of the story I think Hester's husband will punish her for her unfaithfulness towards him. However, this punishment will be long term, and not a simple murder. If Roger was going to kill her instantly, he already had the chance to poison or murder her but he did not. That is why I think Roger is keeping his feelings aside and preparing a master plan to torture Hester for the rest of her life.

Ikea's Saudi Arabia Catalog Erases Women; Company Expresses Regret
Tiffany Hsu, Los Angeles Times
October 1, 2012 an Ikea catalog was issued in Saudi Arabia. All the content of the catalog was the same, however something huge was missing in the pictures. Any picture that had a woman in it was edited in a way where the woman was completely erased from the picture. In any other country, the Swedish catalog had the same pictures, but it included the women. Other than this incident, Saudi Arabia is known for putting women down in public. They do not think that women should be shown freely in public and that those pictures had a negative impact on the country's reputation. Women in Saudi Arabia are expected to travel or study only with a male individual with them. Also, they are not allowed to drive any vehicles in all of Saudi Arabia.
Coming back to the subject of the Ikea catalog, the producer was not happy with the exclusion of women from the pictures. He stated, "We should have reacted to the exclusion of women from the Saudi Arabian version of the catalog since it does not align with the IKEA Group values." It is sad that during this age a country like Saudi Arabia still does not give women simple rights that they deserve.

33,000 Flee Volcano in Guatemala
Associated Press, Los Angeles Times
On September 13, 2012, a volcano exploded in a touristic region of Guatemala. The volcano had a few violent eruptions which sent ash and smoke two miles into the air. Other than the ash there was hot lava falling down on the sides of the mountain, which rolled rapidly over 2,000 feet. However, it was not the lava that was dangerous for the people, it was the smoke that rained down on them. The thick smoke covered the nearby towns and villages right after the volcano exploded. The nearest village was "covered in darkness", said one of the villagers. The name of this volcano translates into "Volcano of Fire" and this eruption explains exactly why it was named that. Health specialists said that there were many respiratory problems and even more eye problems. This was caused because of the thick smoke rained over the towns and made it hard to breathe and see. Natural disasters such as this eruption are inevitable and we can not do anything to stop them. However, if we are prepared, we will not suffer as much.

Taliban Targeted Afghanistan Base to Get to Prince Harry
Laura King, Los Angeles Times
In Kabul, Afghanistan, there were attacks on NATO bases from the Taliban in order to capture or kill Prince Harry. The British Prince is the helicopter pilot in the military and known as Captain Harry Wales. For a while there were decreased amount of attacks in that specific area of Afghanistan, but since Prince Harry has arrived, the number of attacks have increased. The base is heavily guarded which makes it almost impossible to kill a highly ranked official. However, a roadside bomb that was meant for Prince Harry killed twelve civilians and two U.S. marines.
A Taliban spokesman said, "There are many other foreign bases … but we stormed this one because of Prince Harry's presence there." This statement is very straightforward and reveals that the only reason the Taliban attacked the base was because of the Prince. According to some people, the presence of Prince Harry is not benefitting them, instead it is making it more dangerous for others to stay there. If the base was not well guarded, the Taliban would have most likely gotten hold of Prince Harry and probably killed him. Britain should just leave high ranked officials in Britain so it will not cause problems like this elsewhere.

SOAPST "Speech in the Virginia Convention"
Patrick Henry, a patriot and freedom loving person, is giving the influential speech at the Virginia Convention. Henry is giving this speech in the 1770's which was the period of time when the colonies were finally coming together and thinking of being a country of their own. He speaks out to the president, the congress members, and the rest of the audience who he is mainly trying to persuade. The way he talks to the people is very influential and inspirational. Unlike many other people, he has the talent of talking enthusiastically to get his word across to his audience. The whole point of his speech is to persuade and inspire the colonists to fight for their freedom which most of them want. He tells them that if they do not step up and fight, no one is going to do it for them. He even emphasizes how important freedom is for him that he says, "give me freedom, or give me death". For Patrick Henry whether or not the colonists fight, he will fight either way to get his independence.

China Earthquakes Prompt Massive Evacuation
David Pierson, Los Angeles Times
On September 8, 2012 eighty people were killed in China because of two moderate earthquakes. The first earthquake hit at 11:19 A.M. which had a 5.7 magnitude. Just an hour after, an aftershock hit which measured 5.6 magnitude. These earthquakes were not too severe, but since the center was in a rural area, most of the homes collapsed due to poor architecture. 20,000 homes were destroyed or damaged in this area and 100,000 people were evacuated. Even with such a large number of evacuees, eighty people died and 700 other were injured. Countless people are left with no homes and have to wait until the Chinese government seeks some sort of shelter for them.
This disaster in China can be a warning for people living in Los Angeles to always be ready for an earthquake. We live in a very earthquake prone area and in any second the big one might happen. It is already overdue by many years and it is bound to happen sometime soon. We cannot do anything to prevent it from happening. However, we can be prepared for the worst and survive with the least amount of deaths possible.

In Egypt, state news anchor in head scarf causes a stir
By Reem Abdellatif, Los Angeles Times
In Cairo, Egypt, an anchorwoman aired on live television, but with a different wardrobe. She was wearing a scarf over her head to cover her hair. In Muslim tradition it is a rule that women do not show any part of their hair in public. However, it had been fifty years that an anchorwoman had appeared on television with a veil on. This stirred up some problems in the Egyptian community, specifically in Cairo. Some people thought that wearing a veil gives women freedom to do as they please. However, others think that wearing a veil might cause discrimination among the anchorwomen on television.
The reason women had not worn a head scarf for fifty years is because former president Hosni Mubarak had a secular mind-set towards this issue. He made a rule that women should not wear a head scarf on television in order not to have severe discrimination against them. This rule is no longer in order because of the obvious reason that Hosni Mubarak is no longer the president of Egypt.
I think that giving freedom to these anchorwomen is the right choice. If a woman is religious she should have the right to follow her beliefs and in this case wear a head scarf.

Cookies n Cream with Cookie Dough
Ice cream has hundreds of flavors to choose from. Almost any edible food can be mixed with ice cream and have a wonderful taste. The best ice cream however, is vanilla ice cream with cookies n cream and cookie dough. This ice cream not only contains one taste, not two, not three, but four different tastes in one place! The vanilla, and the cookies, and the cream, and the dough mix together to make one amazing flavor of ice cream. Does your ice cream have four different flavors? I didn't think so. Other flavors are too plain and boring to enjoy. However, with this flavor, you will not know which part of the ice cream will come every time you eat. Maybe all four parts of it might come at once! The best part of all is when the soft, creamy cookie dough mixes with the crunchy cookies. The difference in those two tastes adds to how great this ice cream flavor is.
Don't Bother Yelling 'Taxi!' in Saudi Arabia Anymore.
By Carol J. Williams, Los Angeles Times
In Saudi Arabia there has been an innovative method of having less traffic on the road. The only way anyone can get a ride from a taxi is if they call in advance to book their ride. Passengers are no longer allowed to stand on the corner of streets and wave for a taxi to stop and take them to their destination. Even if they are just coming out of an airport, the passengers must call the taxi to reserve a spot. In addition to this new law, all taxi drivers need to place a tracking system in their cars so the company they work for will know exactly where they are going. Any unauthorized stops, driving with no passengers, or breaking any traffic rules will be automatically reported to their bosses.
This new law is very beneficial for Saudi Arabia and its citizens. Less traffic on the road means less pollution in the city which is healthier for the people. Less taxis also gives room for other cars to drive easily and the chance of accidents drops. The fact that there are tracking systems in the taxis is important for the company. A taxi driver will not be able to use the taxi for his personal needs.

U.S. Drone Strikes Kill 18 in Pakistan Near Afghanistan Border
By Alex Rodriguez and Zulfiqar Ali, Los Angeles Times.
On August 24, 2012 a U.S. drone that was hovering over the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan shot a missile from above and killed 18 people. The whole point of this strike was to attack two Taliban groups that were settled in that area. It was supposed to destroy some vehicles that the Taliban groups had, but since there were other civilians in that area, it is not clear who was killed. The foreign ministry speaker of Pakistan said that these drone attacks are illegal by the U.S. and it dangers the lives of innocent people not involved in these terrorist groups. Knowing that America is trying to stop terrorism, these events that took place in Pakistan make sense. However, the citizens living in the area that got hit do not understand why all this is happening. From their perspective it is an attack on them which causes hatred towards foreign countries, in this case America. No person wants a foreign nation bombing their country when they have not done anything to them. When people do not know the full story and what is going on, they interpret the situation in a different way, causing even more tension within a country.
