Congress voted on passing a bill that would drastically reduce the amounts of flight delays in the United States. Surprisingly, the House of Representatives approved the bill 361-41 which means it will later be passed on to President Barrack Obama to be signed and put into use. This measure would allow the Federal Aviation Administration to transfer $253 million from other funds in order to keep air traffic controllers on the job. The more workers that are on the job and working, means that air traffic is handled more precisely and quickly. The funding would also prevent 149 control towers, mostly in rural areas from closing down. These control towers were scheduled to be closed down later this year. Travelers around the United States were starting to get angered from the increased rate of delayed flights so a direct action had to be made. From recent information, President Obama is going to sign the bill. Without the President's approval, the measure would not be put into affect.

Eleven Men Sentenced in Britain for Terrorist Plot
Janet Stobart, Los Angeles Times
Today in Britain, eleven men were sentenced to fifteen years to life in prison. The reason for their conviction was that they had a terrorist plot which was going to surpass the magnitude of the London bombings in 2005 which killed fifty-two people. These eleven men were led by three main terrorists, Ifran Naseer, Ifran Khalid, and Ashik Ali. Naseer who was supposedly the ringleader of this plot was sentenced to life because of five previous terrorism plannings within the past few years. Khalid got eighteen years in prison while Ali got fifteen years. Naseer was accused of persuading people to go to Pakistan for terrorist training. The three men were also accused of obtaining $55,000 from Birmingham's Muslim community for charity but they used that money to fund their terror plans. These terrorists belonged to the notorious Al Qaeda terrorist group which openly stated that these bombing were going to kill many people. Even though there were no specific targets, the plans revealed that there were going to be eight bombs to be left in crowded areas to kill as much people as possible. This terrorist plan was going to turn the city of Birmingham into a war zone.

China Earthquake
Barbara Demick, Los Angeles Times
A 7.0 earthquake struck the mountainous province of Sichuan western China. As of now the death toll of the earthquake is at 156 and over 3,000 people have been injured. Officials expect the death toll to rise by the next day until reports come in from more remote villages. They also told the villagers to be on alert for any possible aftershocks or landslides. 8,000 soldiers were sent to the areas that were affected most. To add to the tragedy, an army vehicle carrying seventeen soldiers slid off a cliff. One soldier died and three others were severely injured.
This earthquake reminded the Chinese about the devastating earthquake they had five years ago in 2008. That earthquake was about the same magnitude, however over 90,000 people died because of it. It is great to see that not as many people died from the same earthquake. This shows that the government learned from their mistake of being unprepared and prepared the civilians this time. The government had a much quicker emergency response plan which saved the lives of thousands of people. Villagers knew what to do and immediately ran outside to open areas which are safer than their homes.
